Notes

Recruiting is always live in D3, NAIA and JUCO football recruiting with no such thing as quiet periods, dead periods, etc. Those three levels also do not have a transfer portal window.

Transfer Portal - Players have 15 days to enter the transfer portal and are immediately eligible assuming they’re academically eligible. There’s no limit on how many times they can transfer, and they may join their next school at any time based on the academic calendar. Players also get a 15-day window to enter the transfer portal that opens five days after the school hires or announces its next head coach.

Contact Period - A contact period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to make in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts and evaluations.

Evaluation Period - An evaluation period is that period of time when it is permissible for authorized athletics department staff members to be involved in off-campus activities designed to assess the academic qualifications and playing ability of prospective student-athletes. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts shall be made with the prospective student-athlete during an evaluation period.

Quiet Period - A quiet period is that period of time when it is permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts only on the member institution’s campus. No in-person, off-campus recruiting contacts or evaluations may be made during the quiet period.

Dead Period - A dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus.

Signing Date Dead Period - A signing date dead period is that period of time when it is not permissible to make in-person recruiting contacts or evaluations on or off the member institution’s campus or to permit official or unofficial visits by prospective student-athletes to the institution’s campus.

Tuesday, April 28, 2026 - This is a busy week in the college sports news cycle. First, here’s what appears likely to be the case moving forward regarding eligibility rules. Players will get five years of eligibility after they graduate from high school or turn 19, which ever happens earlier. No redshirts. No waivers. The only exceptions are things like religions missions, military service, etc. This is only for D1 programs and might go into effect starting with the 2026-27 college football season. The Division I Cabinet will meet on May 22 and could vote on this. Second, Louisiana Tech and Conference USA reached an agreement, leading to the Bulldogs joining the Sun Belt starting with the 2026 season. Lastly, the FBS and FCS are in a contact period on the recruiting calendar through May 23.

FBS QB Headlines

➡️ Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby took a leave of absence to address a gambling addiction and is under NCAA investigation. According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Sorsby bet on Indiana football games in 2022 while playing for the Hoosiers. If the Cincinnati transfer is unavailable this season, Will Hammond would likely be next in line but was limited this spring recovering from a torn ACL. Kirk Francis and Lloyd Jones were splitting second-team reps with Hammond unavailable.

➡️ Missouri QB Austin Simmons was named the starter after spring practice by head coach Eli Drinkwitz. Simmons joined the team this offseason after transferring from Ole Miss with two years of eligibility remaining. Matt Zollers was the top challenger and is now the favorite to land the backup role.

➡️ LSU QB Sam Leavitt missed most of spring practice with a foot injury after undergoing surgery in October 2025. The former Arizona State quarterback committed to LSU this offseason and will look to be ready for the start of the season. Husan Longstreet and Landen Clark received extra reps this spring in their battle for the backup role.

NOTES: 2026 stats and starts will start being updated when the college football season begins on Aug. 29, 2026. The first look at 2027 quarterback rooms will publish after the final weekend of the regular season on Nov. 28, 2026. Eligibility reflects the current rules and will be changed when the new rules are officially put into place, which could be as early as May 22, 2026.

Thatcher decommitted from Utah on New Year’s Day after the coaching staff left for Michigan, which he visited this month. The Wolverines plan to take two 2027 quarterbacks, and Thatcher is considering Michigan, Oregon State, UNLV and Nevada.

Bryson Beaver 🔵💯

2026 4⭐ QB recruit Bryson Beaver (CA) flipped to Georgia from Oregon due the return of Ducks quarterback Dante Moore and addition of Dylan Raiola, his dad tells me. Beaver chose the Bulldogs for regularly being in the national championship discussion and their ability to develop quarterbacks, led by head coach Kirby Smart and OC Mike Bobo.
“The opportunity to be a part of a program of that level was a huge motivating factor. His goal is obviously to one day win the starting position, but until then it means a lot to him to know that he’s going to be getting developed and getting a lot of valuable reps in practice.”

Kaden Craft 🔵💯

2028 4⭐ QB recruit Kaden Craft (NC) may visit LSU over the next few weeks, his dad tells me. Craft already saw the Tigers and visited Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Texas, Texas A&M, Tennessee, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Virginia Tech Clemson and Nebraska over the last couple months. A number of these schools may come to see him, in addition to Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon and Oklahoma.

Keelon Russell and Austin Mack are competing for the starting spot. Russell is the frontrunner after spring practice, but don’t expect the winner to be announced till fall camp. True freshmen Tayden-Evan Kaawa and Jett Thomalla are battling for third string.

Tennessee Volunteers (TN)

George MacIntyre and Faizon Brandon are competing for the starting role, and it seems to be an even battle after spring practice. Head coach Josh Heupel has not named a starter, and Ryan Staub appears locked in to the No. 3 spot.

Penn State Nittany Lions (PA)

Rocco Becht is the starter and limited in spring practice after undergoing surgery in December 2025 to repair a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder. Connor Barry is likely to begin the season as the backup especially with Alex Manske not participating in spring practice. Manske is expected to return for fall camp after undergoing an unspecified medical procedure this offseason.

2027 4⭐ QB Wonderful “Champ” Monds IV (FL) will visit Notre Dame this weekend, his high school coach tells me. He’s coming off recent trips to Ohio State, Florida and Florida State. Of the four schools mentioned, the Gators and Buckeyes already have 2027 quarterbacks committed. Monds reclassified from the 2028 recruiting class.

Elijah Haven 🔵💯

2027 5⭐ QB Elijah Haven (LA) will commit to Alabama or Georgia next week, his high school coach tells me. He visited both schools recently and will announce his decision on April 25. Haven received offers from Alabama and Georgia in June 2025.

Caden Jones 🔵💯

2027 4⭐ QB Caden Jones (CA) scheduled five official visits, his dad tells me. His upcoming OVs include Colorado (May 5), Washington (June 5), Baylor (June 12), Cal (June 16) and Arizona (June 19). Jones will probably take an official visit to Colorado State, which is recruiting him hard for football and basketball. He’s on a Washington unofficial visit today and recently saw Colorado, Baylor Arizona, Cal and UCLA.

2027 3⭐ QB Weston Nielsen (TX) committed to Arizona State over more than a dozen Power Four offers, he tells me. Nielsen credited his connection head coach Kenny Dillingham and offensive coordinator Marcus Arroyo on his decision. He landed an Arizona State offer nearly a year before committing.

Braylen Warren 🅿️4️⃣

2027 3⭐ QB recruit Braylen Warren (NE) committed to Missouri over Florida State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Kansas and Kansas State, he tells me. Warren credited head coach Eli Drinkwitz, the community and family members in the area. Other coaches mentioned to play a big role in his recruitment were OC Chip Lindsey, QBs coach Garrett Riley and offensive assistant Brendan Bognar.

2026 3⭐ QB recruit Tanner Vibabul (NV) flipped from Nebraska to James Madison and considered Arkansas State, Temple, Army and Navy, his dad tells me. He committed to the Cornhuskers for a few weeks before joining the James Madison recruiting class.
“Tanner felt like they really wanted him there, and he loved the campus and surrounding areas. The biggest thing for Tanner was the coaches and their offensive schemes.”

Colton Nussmeier 🅿️4️⃣

2027 4⭐ QB recruit Colton Nussmeier (TX) will commit this summer, he tells me. Nussmeier visited Kentucky recently and took game day visits to LSU and Georgia last fall. He’s working on a spring visit schedule with a fairly wide open recruitment.

Cole Bergeron 🅿️4️⃣

2026 4⭐ QB recruit Cole Bergeron (LA) committed to Georgia Tech days after decommitting from Virginia Tech, he tells me. He committed to the Hokies in August a month before head coach Brent Pry was fired. Bergeron credited Yellow Jackets head coach and Brent Key and co-OC Chris Weinke for his commitment.
”Georgia Tech is a top school, and Coach Key has built a great program. Coach Weinke had recruited me since last spring, so when Signing Day came, I was comfortable with making the decision.”

Crews Jenkins 🅿️4️⃣

2027 3⭐ QB recruit Crews Jenkins (TN) plans to commit within the next 2 months, his dad tells me. He visited Kentucky this week and will take trips to Memphis, USF and Ole Miss over the first three days of April with offers from all three programs.

Kaneal Sweetwyne 🅿️4️⃣

2026 3⭐ QB recruit Kaneal Sweetwyne (UT) committed to Colorado over BYU, Utah, Cal and Sacramento State, his dad tells me. He committed weeks after decommitting from NC State and had been committed to BYU early in his recruitment. Sweetwyne chose the Buffaloes to stay closer to home and play in OC Brennan Marion’s offense.
“Coach Brennan Marion’s offensive scheme was a great fit as it mimics a lot of the game concepts from his high school coach Justin Hemm.”

Jamison Roberts 🅿️4️⃣

2027 4⭐ QB recruit Jamison Roberts (AL) committed to Oklahoma following last week’s visit, he tells me. He also saw Florida earlier in the week and chose the Sooners over Georgia, Auburn, Ole Miss, Iowa, Kentucky, Arkansas and Duke, in addition to the Gators. Roberts was recruited by OC Ben Arbuckle and QBs coach John Kuceyeski, and they told him he’s their only standing 2027 QB offer.
“They made me a priority. They told me I was their guy, and they were not offering another one. That really stood out to me. They kept true to their word.”

Caden Jones 🅿️4️⃣

2027 4⭐ QB recruit Caden Jones (CA) will take an official visit with Arizona, his dad tells me. He wants to take five OVs, which will likely include Washington and Colorado, before committing. Jones also plans to visit UCLA, Baylor, Syracuse and North Carolina at some point and has recently seen Arizona, Cal and Washington. He has opportunities to play football and basketball in college, though his ceiling appears to be higher in football. Cal, Washington and Syracuse would allow him to play basketball, and Jones is getting a heavy push from Hawaii, Colorado State, Utah State and North Texas to play both sports.

Tradon Bessinger 🅿️4️⃣

2026 4⭐ QB Tradon Bessinger (UT) committed to Iowa days after decommitting from Boise State, he tells me. He also considered BYU and UCLA before choosing the Hawkeyes. Bessinger recognized how close the recruits were on his visit, in addition to his bond with the coaching staff.
“These boys are a true brotherhood and are building great relationships. I am super excited to get into an NFL-style offense and learn a ton throughout these next few years.”

2027 4⭐ QB recruit Israel Abrams (IL) will visit Auburn on Friday, he tells me. The Tigers are on his official visit list for June 5, along with Purdue (May 22), Florida State (June 12), Kentucky (June 19) and Tennessee (TBA). Abrams took a recent trips to Purdue and Kentucky.

Gunner Rivers 🅿️

2027 QB recruit Gunner Rivers (AL) committed to NC State after visiting Texas, Georgia, Alabama and Auburn over the past year, his dad tells me. The son of former NFL quarterback Philip Rivers took trips to see the Wolfpack with Kentucky also in the mix. He credited relationships with head coach Dave Doeren and OC Kurt Roper in his recruitment.
“Coach Doeren and Coach Roper believed in me from the very beginning. I’ve been to Raleigh a few times and have a good feel for the culture and the offense. I feel like it’s a great fit. I hope I can help get some other guys in this 27 class to come be a part of something special at NC State in the years to come.”

Ty Knutson 🅿️

2027 QB recruit Ty Knutson (TX) committed to Texas over Oklahoma State, he tells me. He appreciated the coaching staff’s patience in evaluating him and the amount of interest it showed. Knutson is on campus this week with plans to return to Texas for an official visit on June 19-21.
“I want to win at the highest level. Since the first day I was there to watch a game, everybody treated me so well. I love what they have ready for the years to come.”

Kase Evans 🅿️

2026 QB recruit Kase Evans (TX) committed to Penn State a few days after decommitting from Iowa State. Earlier in his recruitment, he committed to Oklahoma State until head coach Mike Gundy was fired. Evans followed the coaching staff he previously committed to, thanks to head coach Matt Campbell and QBs coach Jake Waters, he tells me.
“I developed a really good relationship with both of them. When they called, moving over to a Big Ten powerhouse was a no-brainer.”

2026 QB Recruits

Carter Quinn 🅿️

2026 QB recruit Carter Quinn (FL) will know if he’ll received an extra year of high school eligibility next month, his dad tells me. Quinn missed the 2025 season after being diagnosed with leukemia in December 2024 and will go in front of the Florida High School Athletic Association on April 9. If he’s granted another season of high school football, Quinn would be part of the 2027 recruiting class. He’s been given a full bill of health to resume all activities including football and is determined to play in college. Quinn holds offers from West Virginia, Western Kentucky, Marshall and Ball State.
